African Swords

Our journey continues as we unearth rich history and heritage of Jamaica through artefacts. Today we highlight an embodiment of power from Africa.

Ceremonial Swords

These Elaborate Ceremonial Swords originate from the Yoruba people of Nigeria and are made of bronze. The swords function as symbols of office for Chiefs and Kings. Royal Weapons in Africa are among the most potent embodiments of power. The inherent value of the material alone implies wealth while the artistry of the work comments on the owners refined tastes and aesthetic appreciation.

Did you know?

That you can see these ceremonial swords in Ubuntu the Exhibition at National Museum Jamaica #10-16 East Street Kingston.
