Consider plant-based diet

Vegetarianism, with its origins in ancient India and Greece, has long been linked to the principle of “non-violence”. Spiritual thinkers, sages, and communities have promoted plant-based living not only for moral reasons but also for its calming impact on human nature.

Once dismissed as a passing trend, vegetarianism is now globally recognised as a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle for better well-being and inner balance.

AS THE FOOD SO THE MIND

Modern research has consistently shown that a vegetarian diet supports physical health. It lowers cholesterol, blood pressure, and the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and even cognitive decline. However, its influence on mental and emotional states is less frequently discussed. Ancient wisdom classifies food into three categories:

Sattvic (pure): Fresh fruits, vegetables, and grains that promote calmness, clarity, and kindness.

Rajasic (stimulating): Foods like meat, eggs, onion, garlic, and spices that stir passion and restlessness.

Tamasic (inertia): Processed, stale, putrefied, and preserved food items dull the mind and contribute to lethargy and mental imbalance. They are said to cause early ageing and death.

Food, then, is not merely physical fuel. It subtly shapes our emotional tendencies and spiritual openness.

AGGRESSION IN THE WORLD

The link between what we eat and how we behave is visible even in nature. Similarly, research and observation suggest that humans also mirror this pattern. The effect of meat on behaviour is not just a biochemical process; there is a spiritual aspect to it. The production of meat involves callousness, cruelty, and violence towards other creatures. Eating meat involves participating in an act of violence. The law of karma suggests that supporting harm, even indirectly, dulls the conscience.

In effect, we kill a small part of our conscience when we consume the flesh of a murdered animal. This almost unconscious act of stifling the conscience gradually alters our state of mind and makes us callous towards the suffering of others and prone to aggression. When entire populations regularly consume meat, much of which is produced by mechanised industrial-scale slaughter, a rise in levels of aggression and violence is to be expected. Over time, this may reduce one’s empathy and fuel inner and social conflict.

GENTLE CHOICE FOR A KINDER WORLD

Across the globe, many peaceful communities remained rooted in vegetarianism - a compassionate tradition. They often display deep mutual respect, emotional balance, and harmonious coexistence. In today’s world of growing restlessness, conflict, and digital aggression, their example shines as a quiet yet powerful reminder.

Choosing vegetarianism may seem like a personal dietary decision, but its impact goes far beyond. It is a silent step towards a gentler heart, a calmer mind, and a more compassionate world.
