CASTRIES, St Lucia, CMC – The Department of Health and Wellness says it has received reports of cases of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease from some of the schools across the island.

According to a government statement on Thursday, the viral illness is common in infants and children under five years old and spreads easily in childcare settings due to frequent diaper changes, and because young children often put their hands in their mouths.

The department records cases of hand, foot and mouth disease yearly and early interventions usually limit transmission.

The statement noted that symptoms include fever, reduced appetite, sore throat, and painful mouth sores that usually begin as flat red spots.

The government statement cited measures that can be used to reduce the spread of Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease.

They include frequent hand washing often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after changing diapers.
