Nevis: No active cases of COVID-19 on island
As of May 6, officials in Nevis are reporting that there are no active cases of the deadly COVID-19 virus on the island.
This was confirmed Tuesday by Premier Mark Brantley, Minister responsible for Health, in the Nevis Island Administration.
Nevis is part of the twin-island federation of St Kitts and Nevis.
Brantley celebrated the good news that the four confirmed cases on Nevis who had previously tested positive for the coronavirus in late March and early April, have now fully recovered.
He said each of the four individuals has returned two negative tests consistent with be standards set by the World Health Organization.
A total of 98 persons on Nevis have been tested thus for the virus, the last of the four positive results being returned on April 7.
Brantley says he is extremely heartened by the fact that for the past 29 days there have been no new cases of the virus, and that there are no test results pending.
He further informed that 214 persons have been released from quarantine and 24 individuals - mostly university students who returned home from Jamaica last Thursday - are in quarantine.
In spite of the good news, he reminded citizens that the situation remains fluid and they must stay vigilant and keep doing their part to manage the spread of the virus.
“I am very encouraged by the numbers. We have thus far been fortunate to have no new cases for the past several weeks. We are hopeful that this trend continues until in good time we can declare victory.
“While the situation in our beloved island is positive, at this time I want to urge the public not to relax their guard. That while we are optimistic, we are still cautious and that we have to ensure we continue to do all the things that our health professionals have advised we must do including social distancing, the frequent hand-washing, coughing etiquette and of course, that we stay at home as much as possible.”
