COVID-positive Americans fined in Grenada for breaching home quarantine

ST GEORGE’S, Grenada, CMC – Two United States citizens were on Wednesday each fined EC$5,000 after they were found guilty of breaching the coronavirus (COVID-19) regulations.
A statement from the Royal Grenada Police Force said that Dr Tim McKinney and his wife, Amy Baxter, arrived in the country on November 1 and were approved for home quarantine.
However, they failed to adhere to the protocols for home quarantine as outlined by the Ministry of Health and were arrested and charged.
“They appeared before the St George’s Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday and were fined $5000 each, to be paid forthwith. The fines were paid, and they were subsequently released,” the police statement said.
The Ministry of Health said that at least 38 people had to be placed in quarantine after the two Americans, who tested positive on the fourth day of their arrival, had visited at least four restaurants.
One person who interacted with them eventually tested positive and her son has also tested positive.
The maximum fine for breaching the COVID-19 regulations is EC$10,000 but a bill is scheduled to be debated in the upcoming sitting of the Houses of Parliament to increase it to EC$25,000.
