Carla Barnett to become CARICOM's first woman Secretary-General
Belizean Dr Carla Barnett is to become the first woman secretary general of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).
She is to be installed on Monday, August 16 at 10 a.m. Eastern Time.

From 1997 to 2002, Barnett served as the first woman and youngest deputy-secretary of CARICOM.
An economist, she has broken other barriers while working across the English-speaking Caribbean, including becoming the first woman appointed as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank and as Financial Secretary in Belize.
Barnett has also worked at the Caribbean Development Bank as country economist and vice-president of operations.
She is a long-time advocate for gender-equality which she believes is good economic policy.
Barnett takes over as CARICOM secretary-general from Dominican economist Ambassador Irwin LaRocque who has served since 2011.
