“The solicitation of a gift or personal benefit that is connected directly or indirectly with the performance of one’s duties of his office is therefore illegal,” said Public Utilities Minister Marvin Gonzales.

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad:
Public Utilities Minister Marvin Gonzales has described as illegal and reprehensible reports that postal workers in some districts are soliciting funds from citizens.

The request is made by the postmen who place small brown envelopes in letter boxes.

Gonzales said it must stop immediately as such behaviour is grossly unethical and is at variance with TTPost's governing legislation and policies which is tantamount to misbehaviour in public office.

He said under the Integrity in Public Life Act, public officials and employees may not use public office for their own private gain.

“The solicitation of a gift or personal benefit that is connected directly or indirectly with the performance of one's duties of his office is therefore illegal,” the minister said.

Gonzales said he has mandated the board and management of TTPost to undertake urgent and immediate measures to identify those responsible and urged members of the public approached in this way should report the incidents to the police.
