Barbados elected new chair of Caribbean Tourism Organization
Barbados has been elected to the leadership of the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO).
The country's Minister of Tourism, Ian Gooding-Edghill, assumed the role this morning during the official opening ceremony of the 2024 State of the Tourism Industry Conference, which is being held in the Cayman Islands.
Gooding succeeds Cayman's Kenneth Bryan, whose tenure was marked by several achievements including the launch of the re-imagine exercise to strengthen the organisation and the re-engagement of members such as the US Virgin Islands, Bermuda and St Martin.
Barbados received eight votes from tourism ministers across the region, while St Martin garnered seven in a closely contested election on Tuesday.
Looking ahead, the new chair outlined his vision for the CTO, stressing the importance of unity and cooperation among member states.
He noted the critical time for tourism in the region, with increasing airlift and cruise calls to Caribbean destinations.
He expressed his commitment to working closely with airline, hospitality, and cruise partners, along with new General Secretary and CTO CEO Dona Regis-Prosper, the organisation's team, and member states to ensure continued growth and prosperity in the tourism sector.
“Tourism has had significant economic impact on the region, playing a critical role in GDP [Gross Domestic Product) contribution and employment,” he stated.
Acknowledging the progress made under the previous chairman, he credited Bryan's dynamic leadership in the revitalisation of the organisation, fostering a renewed sense of purpose, and enhanced member engagement.
“The success of the State of the Tourism Industry Conference, marked by high attendance and member commitment, is a direct result of Bryan's efforts to foster a strong sense of belonging within the organisation. I pledge to continue this positive trajectory, particularly focusing on the ongoing reimagining project.”
