Protoje Gets Romantic On New Album

Without hesitation, the young star cited Sandra Foster as his favourite song, named after his first crush.
Protoje, told The Gleaner, in an exclusive interview, that the song is "just a big metaphor" and basically captures the feeling of seeing Sandra Foster for the first time, translated into meeting somebody now in present day.
"Just the vision of her or speaking about her, just brought me back to being a little boy, being all ga-ga for Sandra Foster," he told The Gleaner.
"I can remember the way how she spoke, how she carried herself-just on television," he was hasty to point out, as he never had the pleasure of being acquainted with Foster in real life.
"It's just me using her as a metaphor for somebody who I see those qualities in," he added.
Taking advantage of the freedom that comes with running his own record label and allowing himself to become more experimental with his music and in how it is released. According to Protoje, Royalty Free, is a gauge.
"I've never done a free album and I've always wanted to do one, just to really test it out and see how people respond to that," he said. And while offering this album for free download, he offers that his music breaks barriers.
"If you play a song like Criminal or Who Knows, that's not traditional reggae. I don't have any problem with moving and making the music evolve," he told The Gleaner. "I'm about breaking down the barriers in between music. I don't think it (the music) has to keep sounding like 1978 or 1985 or 1997."
Protoje told The Gleaner, that his musical influences range widely, specifying the work of the late Amy Winehouse and the indie-rock sensations, The Black Keys, while sporting a jersey signed by Burning Spear.
The reggae revivalist promises that this album will showcase some of these influences more, and hopes the reception will be as good or better than the previous album.
