Since he won the British High Commission’s Songs of the UK in JA competition, upcoming artiste Dwight-Christopher Allen, aka Tamo J, has been busy. The artiste now has plans to release two new singles next month.

Tamo J won from a field of 27 entrants in last year’s competition, which he said has given him extensive exposure and opened several doors. The 26-year-old, who, ironically, was born in Luton, London in the United Kingdom, said, “Since the competition, I did some groundwork and performances, which are definitely part of the journey.”

Tamo J, who does both dancehall and reggae, will releaseFake Smile andFalling, produced in tandem with One Army Entertainment.Falling is a love song about a guy who falls in love with a girl while as the title suggests,Fake Smile is about fake friendships and individuals.

No stranger to music, Tamo J’s career actually began six years ago when he self-produced his first EP,Eccentric. He knew he was serious about music since the age of six, when he sang on the choir of the Kencot Seventh-day Adventist Church, but the competition has helped propel his career forward. “The win was far-reaching. It opened lots of doors and created positive linkages for me in the music industry,” he said. Going forward, he sees himself as a performer and producer having written songs for artistes such as Sean Paul (Give Thanks for Life), and produced for D.J. Frass and Singer J.

The competition returns this year and is fully endorsed by the inaugural winner. “This song competition is a great initiative, and an excellent opportunity. Singers should not miss participating. It is best that you give it a try because you never know.”

The competition is open to solo performers and duos. After the first round of judging, videos of the entrants will be uploaded to the social media pages of the British High Commission and the JN Group (sponsors of the competition) for members of the public to vote on the top videos from today until February 4. Following the social media voting, the eight performers with the highest number of votes will move on to the third round, and two wild-card entrants will also be selected by the judges. The panel of adjudicators will also select the top five entrants, who will perform live at the finals, to be held at the UK Jamaica Fair on February 9.
