LUDORUM of the meet was Vilma Charlton from St. Andrew High who trotted up 10 points at the Grant-aided Secondary Schoolgirls Track and Field Championships at Sabina Park in March 1962.

St Andrew High School for Girls have turned out a number of great performances over the 64-year history of the Girls’ Championships. In 1964, though, they achieved something they hadn’t before, and have not since. They won.

ST. ANDREW GIRLS TRACK TITLISTS

Titchfield, Ardenne, Clarendon Next

ST ANDREW HIGH SCHOOL WITH 45 POINTS, EMERGED CHAMPIONS IN THE Grant-aided Secondary Schoolgirls Track and Field Championships which were run at Sabina Park yesterday. Titchfield placed second with 25 points, Ardenne and Clarendon tied for third place with 18 points each, followed by Manchester High the defending champions who scored 16 1/2.

Over 300 girls representing 20 schools took part in the meet and St. Andrew with a well-balanced team took an early lead and never relinquished it.

Competition was keen in all three classes and due mainly to the slippery track, following heavy afternoon showers, there were only four new records.

Class 1 champion was Carmen Williams of Clarendon College, who took the sprint double with easy victories over Jamaica representative Ouida Walker.  Seventeen-year-old Williams set a new record in the 220 yards event lowering her old record of 26.6 to 26.1.

Fifteen-year-old Vilma Charlton of St. Andrew, a strong, powerfully built athlete, won the Class 2  100 yards and 150 yards and placed second in the long jump to take top honours in this class.  She beat her own record in the 100 yards race, turning in a time of 11.7 seconds to clip the former time of 11.8.

Class 3 champion was Pat Henry of Ardenne, who won the high jump with a record 4 feet 7 inches and placed second in the 60 yards dash in a close finish with E. Fletcher of St. Andrew.  She also ran a brilliant final leg in the relay to lift her team from a seemingly hopeless position at the final changeover, to victory.
