The name Norman Manley elicits a sense of pride among Jamaicans from either side of the political divide. Manley, Jamaica’s first Premier, was a Rhodes Scholar who became one of the leading lawyers in the country before entering representational politics, where he excelled. He championed the cause of Universal Adult Suffrage and later sought to band together with other islands in a West Indies Federation, which ultimately failed. Over the course of that storied career, Manley would be seen in many different ways. Here are just a few of those as captured by the lens of The Gleaner over the years.
