PHOTO FLASHBACK: Secretary-general of the United Nations, U Thant, visits Jamaica, February 1963

U Thant (centre) listens as Dr W. Arthur Lewis, vice-chancellor of The University of the West Indies (UWI), explains with the aid of an aerial photograph the layout of the university campus. The occasion was an official visit by U Thant to the UWI on February 19, 1963.

On his arrival in Kingston, U Thant, secretary-general of the United Nations, was welcomed by Donald Sangster, minister of finance. At the centre is Jimmy Lloyd.

U Thant, secretary-general of the United Nations, spent five glorious days in Jamaica. He met with several dignitaries at functions that were kept in his honour.
