PHOTO FLASHBACK: PAST AND PRESENT: HARBOUR VIEW AND ROCKFORT, July 5, 1962

RECORD of the history of Rockfort is upon this plaque on the eastern wall of the old fort.
LIKE AN OASIS along the hot and dusty Rockfort area of palms and the fort.
A DRAWBRIDGE once sealed this entrance to the fort.
DEFENSE of Kingston once relied partly on the vigilance of cannons such as these. Gone are the days when they were a bulwark against attack. Today, they gaze mutely across the sea.
THE TOWER ON THE HILL at Harbour View is one of the landmarks of this thriving new suburbia.
Not far from the obsolete cannons and fortifications, trim houses of Harbour View spread across land that was previously scrub and shrub. This view is from the eye of the old Mortello tower.

Wherever the present is, the past is never far behind. Nowhere is this more true than the eastern area of Kingston, where battlements from the past stand cheek and jowl with shiny new houses of latter-day suburbia.

Cars whizz by guns of Rockfort, silent and deserted now. An old look-out tower gazes down a hillside at the growth of Harbour View. Together, they record the march of time and the development of a country.
