NICARAGUA PRESIDENT ON TWO-DAY VISIT

GENERAL ANASTACIO SOMOZA, President of Nicaragua, arrived at the Palisadoes airport yesterday for a two-day visit with Jamaica’s Governor, Sir Hugh Foot.

The Governor, Lady Foot, the Hon. William Bustamante, Minister for Communications, and Senor Gustavo Tolentino, Dominican Republic Consul representing the Nicaraguan Consul in Jamaica, met the presidential party at the airport.

Dressed in a khaki military uniform and accompanied by his wife in a white uniform, the President was accorded the traditional reception for a visiting head of state.

A guard of honour of the Royal Welch Fusiliers gave the Presidential salute which General Somoza took from a specially created platform.  Accompanied by Captain Frank Pringle, ADC to the Governor, and Major J.E.F. Wiles, officer in charge, he inspected the Guard of Honour.

A small force of policemen in ceremonial uniforms kept order.  After the inspection, the President, accompanied by Sir Hugh and Lady Foot, motored over to King’s House, led by four motorcycle cops.  The remainder of the President’s party followed shortly after.  Most of them are staying at the Myrtle Bank Hotel.

Among those present to witness the event were Brigadier A.C.F. Jackson, Commander of the British Forces in the Caribbean Area.

The President passed through Jamaica on his way to the Dominican Republic recently and expressed interest in the progress made in the Jamaica cattle industry.  As a result, His Excellency Sir Hugh Foot invited him to stay with him on his return if he wished and see something of the industry.

This morning he will visit Hope Gardens and the University College, where he will be received by Sir Thomas Taylor, Principal.  He will then pay a visit to HMS “BugheadBay” (Captain J.A. levers, OBE, RN), where he will be greeted with a salute of guns.

In the afternoon, accompanied by the Custos of St. Catherine the Hon. Captain McGrath, and Mr. James Wright-Director of Agriculture – he will visit the Bodies Agricultural station.  There, he will be shown the new Jamaica Hope breed of cattle.

He will leave Jamaica on his private plane on the return journey to Nicaragua tomorrow..
