The "Voice of Africa" to thrill Charity Ball

Songbird Miriam Makeba arrived on the island for a busy few days. She will be the highlight of the evening at the charity ball hosted by Mr and Mrs Seaga. She will also be given "The Keys of the City" at a civic function.

Miriam Makeba arrives

THE INTERNATIONAL singing star Miriam Makeba, the “Voice of Africa”, arrived in Jamaica yesterday. She is here to give performances at the Regal Theatre today at 7 p.m. and 9.30 p.m.

This is her second appearance in Jamaica in three years, and she will be backed by her musicians as well as Jamaican artistes.

She was accompanied by her musicians Robert Schward and his wife, Grayson Milton ,Joseph Stevens, and Siruca.

She will later sing at the charity ball at the National Arena in aid of community projects in west Kingston.

The Hon. Edward Seaga, minister of planning, and Mrs Seaga are patrons of the ball.

Miss Makeba was met at Palisadoes Airport by Mrs Edward Seaga, Miss S. Khouri, and Mr Arnold Foot Jr.

The Keys of the City, symbolic of the freedom of the City, will be presented to Miss Makeba at a civic reception to be held at the Ward Theatre today, beginning at 11.00 a.m.

Mr Eustace Bird and Mr Milton Rodriques, Commissioners administering the affairs of the Kingston and St Andrew Corporation and the Town Clerk, Mr Glaister G. Duncan, will receive Miss Makeba, after which senior officers of the K.S.A.C. and their wives will be introduced to her in the foyer of the theatre.

A procession to the stage and an overture by the Jamaica Military Band will follow. Speeches will be made by Mr Rodriques and Mr Seaga.

Mr Duncan will read a resolution conferring the Freedom of the City on Miss Makeba., Mr Bird will present the keys to her and she will reply.

Tea at Jamaica House

THE PRIME MINISTER, Hon. Hugh Shearer, will be host to Miss Miriam Makeba at tea today at Jamaica House, at 4.15 p.m.

Guests will include the Minister of Finance and Planning, the Hon. Edward Seaga and Mrs Seaga; Mr and Mrs Hector Gobson; Mr Rex Nettleford; Mr Lorrel Bruce; and Miss Laurel Williams, Miss Jamaica 1967.
