WOLMERS TURNED IN a good all-round performance to regain the Sunlight Cricket Cup, which they last won in 1972, as they eked out a close 13-run win over STATHS just after 5 p.m. at Sabina Park yesterday.  The final scores were Wolmer’s 164, and St Andrew Technical 151.

Resuming at 100 for nine, it took only four deliveries before Mark Lawrence, after hitting a boundary, was bowled by Hylton Gordon to end the innings and give the STATHS skipper figures of seven for 38 in 20.4 overs.

At lunch, the losers were 53 for two wickets with Benson and Hedges opener, Richard Austin, being out caught behind for 22, just as he was about to settle in.

After the break, the batsmen allowed the bowlers to get on top and as a result found runs hard to come by; but Trevor Corke and Knollis Deer made a fight of the situation as both were associated in a third-wicket stand of 57 before Corke went for 43 with five fours.

Deer was snapped up behind the stumps by skipper Jeffrey Dujon after a solid innings of 37 which contained four fours.

Skipper Hylton Gordon, after swinging off-spinner Glen Campbell for a six-over midwicket, tried to force the bowling; but was out to a good diving catch at midwicket by Collin Williams off the same bowler for 10.

The match was evenly balanced at tea with St Andrew Technical having 138 for the loss of six wickets, only needing 26 to win with four wickets still standing.

The new ball was taken immediately after the interval and it was here that the match took a dramatic turn in Wolmer’s favour.

Paceman Peer Gordon, who had toiled very hard during his long spell, got one to move away from Finn Forbes for Dujon to take the catch behind and with the very next delivery he rapped Lascelles Coward in front leaving umpire Ralph Bell in no doubt.

Worse was yet to come as Sherman Maragh, in attempting a big hit off the nagging off-spinner Glen Campbell, was smartly stumped by Dujon for four to make it 149 for nine.

There was tension everywhere as STATHS’s supporters were hoping that their last pair could save the match while the Wolmerians were obviously thinking the opposite.

However, all tension was eased when Gordon swung one across Wilberforce Williams who edged it to the left of the first slip. Wicketkeeper Dujon flung himself to his right to take a beautiful catch much to the delight of the wild cheering fans of Wolmer's.

Campbell, who bowled 33 overs with 13 maidens, dismissed five batsmen for 40, while Gordon, who was always on target, claimed four for 48 off 20.1 overs. Dujon turned in a fine performance, gloving four catches and two stumping successes.
