Miss Hanover heads to Panama

Five women vied for the top spot in the Hanover Beauty contest held at Tryall Hotel. The top three contestants got myriad prizes, including a trip to Panama that was copped by Joy Jones, who was crowned Miss Hanover.

School teacher crowned Miss Hanover

A school teacher, 20-year-old Miss Joy Jones of Maryland, was crowned Miss Hanover 1969 by Miss Fay Fisher of Chester Castle and third prize runner-up of 1968 at the pool of the Tryall Hotel on Saturday night.  She was chosen from five contestants.

Her statistics are 120 1bs., 38-26-39, 5 ft. 3½”. She was sponsored by Wilson’s Hardware, Lucea.  Runners-up were 18-year-old Miss Lorette Davis, sponsored by Lees Self-Service of Green Island 35-26-37, 5 ft. 5¾”, 1121bs. The judges were Mr Benjamin Clare, Mrs Dorothy Wells, Miss Cecile Clare, Miss Barbara Miller and Mr Eddie Hall.  The master of ceremonies was Mr W.N. Byles, JP.

The contestants, although not up to the standard of previous years, were quite pleasant and faced the huge crowd with a feeling of well-preparedness and presented a picture of charm, and being composed and well put together.

Prizes were presented by Mrs A.C. V. Whiting, wife of the Resident Magistrate for Hanover.  Miss Hanover’s prizes are £50 cash, a trip for two to Panama given by Air Corporation Transport and a speci al prize cash from her sponsor, Mr Charles Wilson, among other prizes.  The second prize was £25 cash, a weekend in Ocho Rios, among other prizes, and the third £15 cash, £10 cash from the Mayor of Lucea, Councillor Albert Spence.  Other prize winners were 4th and 5th contestants Misses Bobett Brown and Gwendolyn Brebner, who received cash prizes of £5 each from Dr Eric Campbell and Mr Doyle Frater and gift package prizes.

Miss Keddoo got a prize for the best figure, Miss Brown for the best smile, and Miss Brebner for the best speech. Miss Hanover got the special prize for the best hairdo and personality.

Mr J. N. Braithwaite is the chairman of the Hanover Festival Beauty Contest committee and he and his committee were richly applauded for the beautiful arrangements which were voted the best in years.
