THE MINERAL SPRING at Bath, St Thomas, is said to have been discovered by a slave, who was being badly beaten so he ran away to the hills.  The warm waters healed his wounds so rapidly that he decided to return to his master and led him to the spring to win favour.  And so, the story goes, was founded the town of Bath.
