The hand of fate can scarcely be ignored by all who see the tomb of Lewis Galdy. Born in Montpelier, France, he came to Jamaica, fleeing from religious persecution. He was swallowed up in the great earthquake of 1692 but thrown out again by another shock. He was rescued from the sea where the earth had tossed him and lived “many years after in great reputation”, and “lamented at his death”, which occurred in December, 1739.
