Johnson comes bearing gifts

There was great anticipation as the United States Vice-president, Lyndon B. Johnson, and his wife were scheduled to grace the island with their presence. Their visit held special significance as they joined in the jubilant festivities commemorating the nation's Independence. A highlight of their visit was the presentation of thoughtfully selected symbolic gifts, a heartfelt gesture from President Kennedy.

US Vice-president Johnson comes today

£27,000 scholarship from US announced

UNITED STATES Vice-president Lyndon B. Johnson yesterday announced that a $75,000 (about £27,000) scholarship will be made to the Jamaica Government, at a reception for provitent Jamaican citizens, to be given at the official US Embassy residence, Long Lane, Kingston, on Tuesday, August 7 at 4:20 p.m., according to a release.

The scholarships, which will allow Jamaicans to study in the United States, will be administered by a committee of Jamaicans, with the US ambassador as honorary chairman.

The vice-president will also present Prime Minister, the Hon Sir Alexander Bustamante, with a sterling silver desk set, President Kennedy's official gift.

 

In addition, a bound volume of copies of US independence documents will be given the Jamaican Government by the vice-president. He will also give the prime minister an autographed edition of President Kennedy's book, Profiles in Courage, as a personal gift.

Vice-president Johnson and Mrs Johnson will arrive at the Palisadoes Airport at 3:30 this afternoon to represent the United States at the Independence celebrations.

He will be a guest of the government and, among other engagements, he will also attend the National Parade and Flag-raising Ceremony at the National Stadium this evening and the reception given by Princess Margaret for Commonwealth and foreign delegates at King's House tomorrow, to be followed by a luncheon. He will also attend the Prime Minister's Reception at Vale Royal and the State Ball at the Sheraton Hotel on the same day.

A welcome has been planned for the vice-president today.

He will be met at the airport by His Excellency the Governor General, Sir Kenneth Blackburne, and by Prime Minsiter, Sir Alexander Bustamante.
