In a gripping two-way final against Munro College in St Elizabeth, Jamaica College (JC) clinched the Olivier Shield for the second consecutive year and the 16th time in their history. The final leg ended in a 0-0 draw, with JC having secured a 3-2 victory in the first leg at the stadium the previous Saturday. Despite a rather slow first half marked by challenging wind conditions, JC dominated play.

Olivier Shield stays with Manning Cup at Hope

- JC takes soccer double second year straight

FOR THE SECOND YEAR running and the 16th time in their history, Manning Cup champions Jamaica College won the Olivier Shield, as yesterday they ended the second leg of the two-way final against Munro 0-0 at Munro College in St Elizabeth.  They had won the first leg 3-2 at the stadium last Saturday.  The match was not without incident. Referee Freddie Green had to be escorted off the field by police after Munro supporters crowded him for disallowing a Munro goal near to the scheduled close to play.

Munro made two changes in their team which lost Saturday’s encounter. Outside left Anderson was replaced by regular player Leighton Bailey, who had been on the injured list, and unpredictable centre forward Ryland Givan’s place was taken by Leonard Jacobs.  Munro’s star player, inside right Patrick Powell, and left half Joe Dunn, both of whom were doubtful starters yesterday morning, passed fitness tests.

One change

JC made one change, Peter Wright replacing Ken Snaith at right back.

The first half was rather slow, with JC having the better of play.  Play in this period was marred somewhat by a heavy wind which made ball control difficult.

JC, however should have taken the lead in the sixth minute. ,Inside left Daryl McHardy, with only Kavanaugh to beat after receiving a pass four yards outside the goal, took a tame shot at Kavanaugh.

For the first part of the second half it was JC again, who made most attacks and midway this half should have taken the lead yet again when their unmarked centre forward, Warrick Lyn, kicked wide. In the 25th minute of the half, Munro got their first clear chance foiled when goal-keeper Orville Williams pushed the powerhouse shot from outside right Leighton Carey, taken five yards outside the area.

Munro, gradually coming to life, tried desperately for the equalising goal and were in complete control for the final 15 minutes.

It was during this period after several attacks that the controversy occurred minutes before the end when referee Green ruled no goal when Munro’s inside left William Hutchinson kicked the ball into the back of the net.
