SENATOR the Honourable Clifford Clarence Campbell, president of the Senate and governor general-designate of Jamaica, has been knighted and made a GCMG by Her Majesty the Queen.

A government release yesterday says, "It has been officially announced from Buckingham Palace that Her Majesty the Queen has been graciously pleased to approve the appointment of Senator the Honourable C.C. Campbell to be a Knight Grand Cross of The Most Distinguished Order of St Michael and St George.

"Her Majesty the Queen presented Sir Clifford Campbell with the insignia of GCMG at Buckingham Palace today."

Sir Clifford, who later lunched with Her Majesty, is in London on his way home from the conference of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, held recently in Lagos, Nigeria, which he attended as a member of Jamaica's delegation.

Sir Clifford's appointment as the first Jamaican governor general of this country was made by the Queen on October 18 following the recommendation of the prime minister, Sir Alexander Bustamante.

He takes over on December 1 from Sir Kenneth Blackburne, who goes on pre-retirement leave on November 30.

The first native governor general in the Commonwealth to receive the GCMG is Sir Henry Lightfoot Boston (governor general and commander-in-chief of Sierra Leone), who was received in the audience by the Queen on November 1, when Her Majesty conferred upon him the honour of knighthood and invested him with the insignia of the GCMG.
