2,000 children hear concert by P.R. Symphony Orchestra
Over 2,000 primary and secondary schoolchildren filled the Carib Theatre on December 7 for the concert given by the 75-member Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra.
This was the final concert in the orchestra's 1967 Caribbean tour which took them from November 27 to St. Croix and St Thomas in the US Virgin Islands, to Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic and Kingston, Jamaica. The players return to Puerto Rico tomorrow.
The players return to Puerto Rico tomorrow.
The tour was jointly sponsored by the Ford Foundation, and the Casals Festival of the Puerto Rican Government of the host countries.
Two concerts were given in Jamaica, one on Tuesday night for the general public and yesterday's concert for children, many of whom were turned away because there was no room in the theatre.
Piece de resistance in the children's programme was Prokofieff's 'Peter and the Wolf'. Narrator was Alfredo Matilla. Each character in the tale was identified by a particular instrument – the bird by the flutes; the duck by the oboes; the cat by the clarinets, the grandfather by the bassoons, the wolf by the horns; Peter by the stringed quintet; the hunters by the kettle drums and the rifle shots by the big drum.
Piano soloist was Jesus Maria Sanroma and the orchestra was conducted by Victor Tevah.
After the concert, several children went on stage and received the autograph of St Sanroma, who played for them as they sang Christmas carols.
