SHE beamed a rather nervous smile and did not attempt to conceal the fact that she “was not expecting to win at all.”

That was how 22-year-old Victoria Elizabeth Dunbar of Padmore district reacted when she was chosen Miss St. Andrew Farm Queen from among the several contestants who vied for the title at the St. Andrew Agricultural Show at the Constant Spring Recreation Ground on Ash Wednesday.

Miss Dunbar, daughter of small farmer Mr Caribert Dunbar and his wife, both of Padmore district, is a teacher, who has retained the love of farming, which she developed as a youngster.

At the present time, she said, she had a vegetable garden, but she also enjoys cultivating flowers, which grew abundantly in the area in which she lived.

“Recently, I have been trying my hand at yams, and in fact, my first planting is growing well,” she confided.

How did it feel to be chosen to represent St. Andrew? The reply was spontaneous. “I feel very happy at having been chosen, and I intend to be a worthy representative of my parish,” said Miss Dunbar.

Asked whether she intended to maintain her interest in farming, the St. Andrew Farm Queen replied, “Most certainly.”

Miss Dunbar was crowned and robed by last year's winner, Miss Maureen Barrett.
Runners-up in the contest were Miss Evelyn Wilson, 22, of Red Hills district, who placed second, and Miss Lorna Henry, 24, of Cavaliers district, who ran third.

Judges of the competition were Mrs Stanford Reid and Mrs Glen Owen.

The new St. Andrew Farm Queen will represent her parish at this year's annual agricultural show at Denbigh in May Pen, Clarendon.
