A very impressive group at the opening of the IX Central American and Caribbean Games at the National Stadium in August 1962 was the Mexicans dressed in scarlet and white. The men wore scarlet blazers and white trousers and the women, some of whom are shown here, wore scarlet blouses, white skirts and white gloves.
UP GOES the green flag with the coat of arms of the City of Kingston, being raised at Saturday, August 11, 1962 opening of the Games by His Worship the Mayor of the city, Councillor Frank Spaulding. A fanfare was sounded to herald the flag-raising, and while it was being hoisted a section of the Jamaica Military Band played the Anthem of the City of Kingston, composed by Lloyd Hall and sung by the massed choirs conducted by Hall. The Bishop of Jamaica, the Rt Rev Percival Gibson, offered a prayer to close the Opening Ceremonies of the IX Central American and Caribbean Games at the National Stadium in August 1962. At left is Dr Herbert Clews who translated the bishop’s prayer into Spanish for the benefit of the Spanish-speaking competitors.
In a landmark moment, the IX Central American and Caribbean Games were officially opened on August 11, 1962 at Jamaica's National Stadium, marking the first time the event was held in an English-speaking country since its inception in 1926.
