Crowned ‘Mico Student of the Year

A senior-year student at Mico College, Miss Mevalrie Cohall, has been chosen Mico Student of the Year. Miss Cohall also won the prize for Best Female Student of the Year.

The competition took place at the eighth annual Mico College Student of the Year concert held at the State Theatre on Saturday night.

A packed audience, consisting of the Mayor of Kingston, Councillor Emerson Barrett and Mrs. Barrett; the Chinese Ambassador, Mr. Kurt Schmidt and Mrs. Schmidt; the French Chargé d’Affaires, Mr. Jean Paul Schrieke; the Hon. Glen Owen and Mrs. Owen; and others, were entertained by a variety programme put on by the students and outside groups.

Miss Cohall received as her prize the Jim Russell Cup, presented by last year’s winner, Mr. Jeremy Palmer. She also received a prize of a trip to Mexico by Mexicana Airlines. The airline ticket to Miss Cohall was presented on behalf of Arthur Grant House.
Runner-up in the competition was Mr. Andel Bailey, representing Bishop House, who received as his prize a trip to Miami and the Dudley Soutar Cup.

Various Houses
Prior to the announcement of the winners, the 12 competitors, who were taken from the various houses of the college (a boy and a girl from each house), paraded before the audience.

Another stage of the concert was the announcement of the student winning the prize for Most Improved Student of the Year. This year, the prize went to Miss Pauline Bishop, a final-year student at Mico. She received the Seprod Cup and a trip to Miami. Her cup was presented by Mrs. A. Hibbert.

All prize winners will be accompanied on their trips by members of the Mico staff.
Contestants in the Student of the Year competition are judged each year on integrity, courtesy, speech, intelligence, deportment, initiative, and service to the college and community. The contest was started to provide an additional incentive for students who are preparing themselves “to guide our country’s youths of the year.”

After being crowned Student of the Year, Miss Cohall expressed her surprise at being chosen and thanked the students and the principal of the school.

A variety programme of entertainment was provided at the concert. These included selections by the Mico female and male choirs; elocutions by students Merl Morrison and Trevor Nairn; a clarinet solo by Mr. Robert Barton; a piano solo by K. Robertson; digging songs by a Mico group; songs from the musical Oliver also presented by Mico students; a creative dance by students; a cantata; instrumental selections; and a Jamaican rumba dance.

Chairman of the function was the principal of Mico, the Hon. Glen Owen, who also welcomed guests to the concert.
