Dennis Minott | Create a Compassionate Republic of Jamaica
For 25 years of A-QuEST’s 39-year existence, I visited Montego Bay once a week to coach several of the bright and hard-working students of western Jamaica on smarter ways to access the world’s best universities. During my weekly coaching trips around the island from my home base in “scenic and peaceful” Port Antonio, I divided the largest parts of my workweek into staying in Black River, the ‘quiet, peaceful town’; Mandeville, the ‘cool, clean and classy schools’ town’, and the last leg, sweet Montego Bay, the ‘friendly city’ (… with great seafood).
Initially, these monikers were justified; the towns lived up to their names. Locals and people commuting alike cherished these endearing titles. However, remarkable backsliding has been occurring recently, prompting a reflection on the identity and future of our beloved nation as it prepares to adopt republican status.
As Jamaica stands on the brink of a significant constitutional change, it is an opportune moment to reimagine our national identity. Instead of simply renaming our country the ‘Republic of Jamaica’, upon shedding our ties to the monarchy of Britain, I propose a name that encapsulates our core values and aspirations: The Compassionate Republic of Jamaica (CRJ). This name would reflect our nation’s enduring but weathered DNA of kindness, unity, and resilience. There is immense power in names; they shape perceptions, inspire actions, and forge identities. Let us explore why The Compassionate Republic of Jamaica would be a fitting albeit transformative choice for our nation.
REFLECTING OUR TRUE NATURE
Jamaica is renowned worldwide for its warmth and hospitality. From the bustling streets of Kingston to the tranquil beaches of Negril, Jamaicans are known for their friendliness and generosity. The name The Compassionate Republic of Jamaica would highlight these intrinsic qualities, reinforcing our reputation as a nation that values kindness and community. It would remind us and the world that compassion is at the heart of our identity.
INSPIRING UNITY AND SOCIAL HARMONY
A name that emphasises compassion can serve as a powerful unifying force. In a diverse society like ours where various cultural heritages, ethnicities, and religious stripes coexist, compassion is the glue that holds us together. By adopting this name, we would be making a public commitment to fostering social harmony, understanding, and respect among all Jamaicans. It would be a constant reminder that, despite our differences, we are all part of one compassionate nation.
ENHANCING OUR GLOBAL IMAGE
Jamaica has always punched above its weight on the global stage, be it in sports, music, or culture. By branding ourselves as The Compassionate Republic of Jamaica, we would enhance our international image in a new and profound way. It would position Jamaica, our big little nation, as a leader in promoting compassion and humanitarian values, potentially attracting more tourists, investors, and international partnerships. This new identity could boost our diplomatic influence and allow us to boldly champion global causes aligned with our values.
ENCOURAGING NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Compassion is not just about feelings; it translates into actions that benefit society. A compassionate nation prioritises education, healthcare, social justice, environmental sustainability, and prudent economic management. By embedding compassion into our national identity, we would be setting a clear direction for our development policies. It would encourage government and private sector initiatives that aim to uplift the underprivileged, protect our natural resources, and create a more equitable society. This name would inspire all CRJ Jamaicans to contribute to nation-building efforts that are grounded in empathy and care for one another.
HONOURING OUR HERITAGE AND FUTURE ASPIRATIONS
Jamaica’s history is marked by struggles for freedom, equality, and justice. Our heroes fought not just for independence but for a society where every individual is valued and treated with dignity. The Compassionate Republic of Jamaica would honour their legacy by carrying forward their vision of a just and humane society. It would also align with our future aspirations of becoming a nation where every citizen has the opportunity to thrive in a compassionate environment.
CREATING A SENSE OF PRIDE
A name that captures the essence of our collective values can instil a deep sense of pride among Jamaicans. It would give us a renewed sense of purpose and direction, motivating us to live up to the ideals that the name represents. This pride would not be rooted in nationalism but in a shared commitment to compassion and humanity. It would empower us to tackle challenges with a positive and constructive attitude, knowing that we are part of ‘the big little nation’, something greater than ourselves.
As we stand at the crossroads of history, the decision to rename our country is more than a mere formality. It is an opportunity to redefine who we are and what we stand for. The Compassionate Republic of Jamaica is not just a name; it is a declaration, a vision for our future. It embodies the values that have always been at the core of our identity, and sets a course for a more united, just, and prosperous nation. Let us seize this moment to embrace a name that truly reflects our spirit and aspirations. Let us resolutely resurrect and further become The Compassionate Republic of Jamaica, a beacon of kindness and humanity in the world.
