The Government and the opposition People's National Party are expected to host their first stakeholder meeting on January 16 in order to forge consensus on national security and crime management issues.

This was the highlight from Monday's meeting between Prime Minister Andrew Holness and Opposition Leader Dr Peter Phillips, as well as members of their respective teams.

In a statement released yesterday, it was noted that it was also agreed that the respective legal teams would meet to discuss and agree, where possible, on the crime-control powers to be utilised in the existing legislative framework or new legislation.

According to the statement, both teams engaged in a full, frank and wide-ranging discussion and explored issues.

These included human rights, possible legislative amendments that could enhance crime-management capabilities of the security forces, and additional resources - financial, technical and human - to improve the capacity of the security forces.
