WESTERN BUREAU:

Utility companies have been called on to fashion specially tailored monthly bills to facilitate teachers and students who currently have to pursue education online at home after schools were closed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The mass home-schooling stopgap is expected to drive up consumption and bills for electricity, water, and Internet connectivity, said Owen Speid, president of the Jamaica Teachers’ Association.

“I’m calling on the Jamaica Public Service Company, the National Water Commission, and also the two major telecommunications giants, Digicel and FLOW, to cut their bills to the people at this time,” Speid told The Gleaner on Wednesday.

The government-ordered schools will run from March 13 till at least the end of Easter.
