Exercise more than your eyes

THE EDITOR, Sir:
It is said that you can gauge a country's priorities by observing what excites its people.
I wonder how Jamaica is made better off with hundreds of its able-bodied citizens seated in the stands of the National Stadium and tens of thousands more couch potatoes slumped in their easy chairs elsewhere, with eyes glued to television screens watching a handful of youth show off their athletic prowess at Boys and Girls' Athletics Championships.
For any real and lasting benefit to accrue, we need, instead, to be out there in like fashion, participating in the rigours of physical exercise to discipline our minds and bodies to become a nation of achievers, not just largely onlookers.
