Hydel's achievement beyond expectation
The Editor, Sir:
The dominance of Hydel at the recently concluded 2018 ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls' Athletics Championships reveals the hidden potential that is deeply embedded in us as a nation.
Hydel did not start off on a level playing field. Its participation at Champs can be likened to a baby attempting to fight in a ring that is peopled with giants.
A young school, comparatively speaking, not well-endowed, not having the support of wealthy past students, lacking the necessary physical and financial resources together with the requisite traditional linkages, its rise to dominance has been nothing short of spectacular and in the process, it has won the respect and admiration of many, far beyond the shores of this country.
What has led to this achievement? It can be attributed to the sheer determination and unconquerable spirit built on the dream and aspiration of one woman, its founder, Hyacinth Bennett.
It is clear that we don't lack the ability in Jamaica to get things right. If one woman can inspire an educational institution to such greatness, what is preventing the rest of us as a people from doing the same?
