Focus more on agricultural science
THE EDITOR, Sir:
Mark Ricketts' article 'Education ministry must change its name' (Sunday Gleaner, April 22, 2018) was so refreshing. Thanks to the author for having spent the time writing it for our consumption.
I trust that the state minister at the Ministry of Education has read it, as I suspect that he is more akin to such ideas than his boss. You make the point about the disconnect between agricultural science and the main thrust of the MOE. Solid observation. In fact, I would go one step further. No student of science should feel that it is okay to graduate knowing only the three natural sciences and nothing of agriculture and computer science, along with a study of economics.
We cannot get the value-added jobs if we fail to focus in the manner that you are suggesting.
I really hope that someone with some influence is listening, as time has come for us to realise that the matter of data is the water of this generation and beyond.
