Stop squabbling over CRH; fix it

Published:Sunday | April 29, 2018 | 12:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

For months on end we have heard politicians engage in the blame game of whose fault it is that Cornwall Regional Hospital (CRH) is in the condition it is and why it was not evacuated and shut down a year ago. All and sundry are forgetting that the problems of this for western Jamaica so important institution started a long time ago.

Most public buildings in Jamaica lack or have minuscule scheduled maintenance, which is critical for the welfare of employees, buildings and equipment. CRH is a prime example of mismanagement, lack of funding, or both.

One cannot erect a building or plant without including scheduled maintenance in the budget planning. Most private businesses have long realised the importance and common sense of that norm. All over Jamaica, we see public buildings like courthouses, hospitals, police stations, fire stations and equipment falling to pieces for lack of maintenance.

It is high time to stop the political squabble and work together for the best solution. This Government should employ professionals who really understand modern maintenance practices and, most important, include appropriate funding for public buildings and plants in the yearly Budget. It costs far less in the long run.
