Absentee dads rob kids of mentorship
THE EDITOR, Sir:
Father's Day is fast approaching. Dads are celebrated for their heroic efforts to their families. What can we do without them? It is indeed a pleasure to celebrate our dads.
When I go to church here in Jamaica, I hardly see dads, and men for that matter. Dads should know that they can be good role models to their children, especially boys. Just as a pastor gives his congregation wisdom every Sunday when he elaborates on scripture, so, too, can dads engage young minds with stories from their past.
In universities, young women are outperforming young men. Could this be as a result of poor mentorship from dads in the homes? Psychologists say that dads only need to be present in the home to make a difference.
Families here in the island of Jamaica need to come together this Father's day. Let dads know just how well they are deserved. The world is equally divided between both genders. Dads need to be a permanent fixture in the homes. They are needed for discipline, mentorship, and guidance.
