Let farmers have a go at sugar lands
THE EDITOR, Sir:
In the days of Michael Manley, he was my hero. Now that I live in the United States, I daily follow up the news in Jamaica. I don't know why Mr Bartlett replaced Mr Manley, but Mr Shaw is giving him some competition. I am so excited to see this move to help the farmers.
I would go further and lease the land to the farmers and then transfer, not sell, lest they have the inability to pay for it based on their meagre income. I do not have all the details but I believe that the farmers should have more say in the ownership of the sugar industry.
If you pardon the French: Why the hell the farmers can't own the land they have worked for decades? Was slavery not abolished?
I better close now, as I am getting too passionate about something I cannot change.
