Locals must invest more in hotels

Published:Thursday | October 4, 2018 | 12:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

Foreign direct investment (FDI) in tourism is a simple matter of constructing a building. This is being done by outsiders. Why can't local investors do that?

When this is done, so much more trickles down in our nation, rather than being siphoned away overseas. Here is another overseas company doing so - putting up a 1,100-room hotel. Why can't we have three groups of financiers and investors using, perhaps, pensions or insurance funds in building three hotels in three different parts of the nation?

Think Negril, Portland, Montego Bay, getting tourists here and there, making money and providing jobs. Those at the bottom would benefit as well.
