Revise road rule regarding hazard lights

Published:Thursday | November 22, 2018 | 12:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

Have you ever driven with hazard lights on? How can a motorist breach the Road Code using hazard lights? The answer may surprise many.

Hazard lights flashing from parked vehicles, those being towed, piloted, or moving slowly are a fairly common occurrence on our roads. These lights have prevented many collisions.

If I understand correctly, the common practice of motorists driving slowly and flashing the hazard lights, (because of safety concerns due to fog, rain, bad or slippery roads, or mechanical problems) is actually prohibited by the Jamaican Road Code. Interesting.

The website of the National Road Safety Council, which outlines the Jamaican Road Code, clearly states: "Never drive your vehicle with the hazard lights in operation."

This rule of the road needs clarification and revision by the relevant authorities.
