Security forces in need of an SOE

Published:Wednesday | December 19, 2018 | 12:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

Our security forces are in dire need of a state of emergency. The Opposition has convinced me to speak out against the extension of any further extension of a state of emergency (SOE).

We should not have to resort to SOEs as a normal policing strategy in order to deal with domestic crime control. This, I assure you, speaks to one simple fact: that effective crime-fighting is beyond the capability of our security forces.

We have been talking about this for a number of years. So much money has been spent acquiring motor vehicles for the security forces over the last decade. Why aren't police stations computerised? Why aren't we hiring the best candidates to become police officers? There are so many things wrong with our security forces right now.

Our security forces are in dire need of a SOE. The government should be moving swiftly to address our archaic security forces and stop bawling about extending SOEs.
