Letter of the Day | Concerned about road fatalities

Published:Tuesday | February 5, 2019 | 12:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

Let us take a note of this very important statement: “We are concerned about road fatalities. The World Health Organization (WHO) has defined the period 2011-2020 as the Decade of Action for Road Safety, officially proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 2010,” said executive director of the National Road Safety Council (NRSC), Paula Fletcher, in a Gleaner article, dated Saturday, February 2, 2019. She, along with others, are very concerned about the way in which so many people are dying on our roads.

What can be more foolish, more senseless and heart-wrenching when motorists are deliberately committing suicide on our roads by refusing to obey road traffic laws – and driving madly and carelessly every day – resulting in thousands of lives being lost over a period of many years?

DIVINE INTERVENTION

Some road hogs will continue to drive like they are in a racing competition, or as if they are on the Dover Race Track, especially if and when no police are around. So what we need to do is to take a national time out and pray to God, sincerely, that ‘unseen road hogs’ (unseen by the police), who are wreaking havoc on the streets of Jamaica by their bad road manners and dirty driving habit, that God will take care of these road monsters. Yes, only God can do something drastic to these hogs, because it’s difficult for the cop to get around them in incredible ways – if you know what I mean by saying that.
