The irony of it all

THE EDITOR, Sir:

Jamaicans are spiritual people. While we often disagree on church denominations, favourite ministers, and even appropriate attire, the teachings, for the most part, remain the same. We are taught not to take pleasure in the misfortune of others, and in no way is this letter meant to do that. However, God never sleeps.

Months ago, RUBiS, a multinational company, ended agreements with some of its Corporate Area contractors, a move that stirred much controversy, public outcry and calls for government intervention. In a matter of a few weeks, the operators of the stations at Water Lane and Manor Park had to vacate those premises.

The Manor Park station, despite being successfully operated by Jacqueline Geddes for many, many years, was hastily whisked away from her control after the company brought her contract to a close. Having dismissed the rights and feelings of its Jamaican partners, RUBiS assumed full control of the property. The irony of it all is that in the same way it was pried from the grips of Mrs Geddes, without much concern for her years of diligent service, her staff members and operational expenses, RUBiS will be forced out of the same space.

It seems the slap to the face they handed the contractors has found its way back to them sooner than they thought.
