Why I stand with the Pembroke Hall High teacher
THE EDITOR, Madam:
As a teacher, I know what students can do to your psyche and make you lose your cool and touch with reality. I am here in defense of the Pembroke Hall High School teacher because some schoolchildren now-a-days can be very cruel, rude, crude and disgusting, to say the least. They are fully cognizant that they possess more rights than the teachers who disseminate invaluable information to them on a daily basis. We need more people within our society to come to these schools on a regular basis and experience what are some of the dastardly things students are known to do. Teachers are human beings who too have feelings like the students who try their very best to disrupt the classroom activities, day after day.
There are three sides to this story: the schoolteacher’s side, the student’s and obviously, the truth. One has to be careful when taking cues from students because they will always be in solidarity with their peers. Likewise, the teachers will be making positive statements for their coworkers. It is a common occurrence in many schools wherein students just walk by a teacher, cursing expletives without any regard. If you dare to you attempt to reprimand, you are then regarded as a very troublesome teacher who harasses the students daily.
We need a common ground wherein students can show greater respect for their teachers and teachers likewise must reciprocate. No one could ever say that the teacher was right to send life threats to the student, however, the teacher should not be judged without seeking dialogue with her.
I humbly submit that the acting Minister of Education, Karl Samuda, is too hasty in making judgment about the ending of the services of the teacher without hearing from her.
