THE EDITOR, Madam:

André Sutherland’s ‘Popcaan and Friends – Unruly Fest’ must go down in music history as one of the finest live performances of all time. If it is correct that timing is everything, then Unruly Fest – already billed to be a memorable event – was propelled even further when another child of St Thomas, Ms Toni-Ann Singh, pulled it off on the world stage and was crowned Miss World a week before the event, and immediately thereafter endorsed her parishioner’s fest.

As my client of many years, I have watched Popcaan grow from strength to strength. André is a proud son of rural Jamaica, from the ‘forgotten parish’ of St Thomas. As he reentered the earth’s atmosphere on Sunday morning, Popcaan, the astronaut, decked in outer-space costume, landed on stage to jaw-dropping acceptance of an ecstatic crowd that had waited patiently for hours for the arrival of the superstar.

Proceeded by the old and the new performers, it was simply Poppy’s night, or rather, his morning. I have no official estimate, but he packed that double football field venue with little space left for patrons to walk about.

Popcaan has demonstrated that with hard work, a poor youth can set unmeasurable standards in performance, production and class. It is by no accident that he chooses to be the astronaut artiste, touching down in St Thomas, as truly, the Unruly’s act and production were simply out of this world.
