Leave our leave alone!
THE EDITOR, Madam:
The extra lessons are indeed beneficial to the teachers to supplement their incomes, and to earn bragging rights when their students excel because of the additional attention. In retrospect, extra lessons forge a symbiotic relationship with home and school, as many parents rely on teachers to provide the service so that they can focus on their careers, and even studies.
Teachers are suffering from burnout, depression and lifestyle diseases. Many keel over on the job, and for those fortunate enough to attain retirement age, our quality of life is seriously compromised. The leave entitlement might be the most attractive and needed benefit that is afforded a Jamaican educator. We need the breaks to refocus, recharge, reflect, and resuscitate ourselves to face our daily grind. The leave entitlement is not a want but a need.
Kindly leave our leave alone!!
