Rethink the cancellation of Champs
THE EDITOR, Madam:
The cancellation of the ISSA/Grace Kennedy Boys and Girls’ Athletic Championships should be reappraised and a postponement be considered instead. Athletes have trained long and hard to prepare themselves for this event, only to be denied the chance of showcasing their talent because of unforeseen circumstances.
The decision to cancel should be a last resort, only after all other options have been contemplated.
For some of the athletes, this will be their final year in high school, and not getting the chance to perform could be a missed opportunity to be endorsed by some major brand. Also, the likelihood of a scholarship to a university abroad could be missed.
The decision to cancel is not cast in stone, so a rethink of the plan which would result favourably for the athletes, sports enthusiasts, sponsors, stakeholders and all concerned would be welcome.
