Make Internet more affordable and accessible
THE EDITOR, Madam:
Greetings. I am a grade-11 student and it is imperative that school-based assessment assignments, attendance and participation within online classes are priorities. I would like some clarity on the matter of why unlimited service is not provided for those residing in some sections of the island, specifically by FLOW Jamaica. They have done a good job by improving their services, but there some ongoing issues that should be addressed quickly.
Living in an area where Internet connection is uncertain, coupled with the dire financial effects the COVID-19 pandemic has had on the less fortunate, it is important that adjustments are put in place so that learning and interaction can take place safely and effectively for students. Internet bills are one of the major expenses and it can be very difficult for those parents who have either lost their jobs or facing pay cuts to take proper care of their children and, sometimes, themselves.
I propose that Internet or data costs are reduced, perhaps unlimited Wi-Fi services may be offered to those who already have the service but have to pay extra when the allotted amount is overused. We have to take into consideration multiple family members, including children who are studying in different grades and have to attend online classes, adults who work from home digitally, in addition to online research, downloading study materials, sourcing additional information on the Internet and many more.
In concluding, I would like to say that the issue of unemployment, lack of source of income and high prices in Internet and Wi-Fi costs all contribute to the difficult strains inflicted upon those who are less fortunate. I would love if some light is shed on this problem, not just for me, but for everyone who may be experiencing a similar situation in Jamaica.
