Talkback Thursday| We need accountability

Published:Thursday | October 8, 2020 | 12:08 AM

THE GOVERNMENT, with a majority seat in Parliament, has indicated that it will discontinue the practice of having opposition members chair all key oversight committees of Parliament. We asked our followers their thoughts on the matter.

“Sounds dictatorial to me.” -- @trizzidore

“Just remember, Jamaica is still a democracy!” -- @summervillereid

“Good. Get rid of them once and for all.” -- @simmsraghik

“I care not who chairs these committee, accountability is what I care about.” -- @cariboi2

“I agree with removing the Opposition as chairing committees. The Opposition used its position as a way to manipulate public opinion against the Government. It was a bad idea from the start.” -- @burniedee

“If they’re not performing at an efficient level for the benefit of the country, replace them immediately. -- @SteveLa70145903

“The Government is relieving the Opposition of a job it had that it did very poorly. We require better accountability, oversight and efficiency, this is a key factor; fix the parts that don’t work.” -- @stbessgirl

“Giving chairmanships to the Opposition is a courtesy, not a rule. Chairmanships are not a requirement for oversight. The Government should to take control in order to execute its agenda without delay. The citizens will judge them in five years.” -- @StephenGLFox

“Good move. If they have not been working well, why continue with them?” -- @CeliaMcKoy

“It should be taken away long time, what do you expect? All they will do is derailed things.” -- Cathay Messam

“That is a huge mistake and they should rethink their position. ‘Absolute power corrupts absolutely’.” -- Renaco Stewart

“While I have some concerns with this approach, if the Government can demonstrate that the change will result in actual accomplishments, then their decision is okay with me.” -- Bruce Smith

“Bruce Golding implemented the rule to allow the Opposition to chair those committees to try to minimiSe corruption. Keep it that way.” -- Merrick Forrest
