Gross injustice to the doctors

Published:Tuesday | July 13, 2021 | 12:07 AM

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I don’t know how more ironic this can be in the midst of a global pandemic, but over a 100 doctors are currently unemployed. After five to seven years at medical school, and being the key and critical force in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, this is nothing but short-sightedness.

If Jamaica is travelling on the road to ruin, this is the first real step in that direction. What a day to be a doctor when you have no job in a population of almost three million people, with half being society’s most vulnerable. Whatever the People’s National Party did, or what the Jamaica Labour Party is doing, has no bearing on the fallacy of avoiding proper contracts, wages, and benefits for this noble profession.

Doctors are people, too, and serve like soldiers and nurses!

No country can function without proper healthcare services. Additionally, our healthcare services are overburdened, and in my opinion, below international standards. I just don’t understand how we got here, and we hear that the Government is talking about revitalising the entertainment industry! Hopefully, Jamaicans will realise this gross error on the part of all involved and hold them accountable.

We need to realise that when we’re waiting for all hours at the island’s health centres and clinics, our so-called leaders can fly out for medical treatment.
