Our doctors have been stabbed in the back

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I DON’T know how more ironic this can be in the midst of a global pandemic, but of all the jobs to lose, some 143 doctors are unemployed. After seven years at medical school, the lack of liveable wages and short-sightedness, we have terminated their services in a woeful healthcare system. These professionals worked hard to live as their dreams dictated and now they’ve been stabbed in the back.

Jamaica is on a road to ruin and this is the first real step in that direction. What a day to be a doctor – when you have no job in a population of almost three million people, with half being society’s most vulnerable.

No country can function without proper health services. Additionally, Jamaica’s health services are overburdened and, in my opinion, below international standards. Hopefully, Jamaicans will punish this gross error on the part of all involved in the governance of this country.
