Readers’ reactions – Large hospitals over capacity for COVID-19 admissions
As COVID-19 cases continue to climb across the island, plunging the country into a third wave of the virus, the Ministry of Health is reporting that all large hospitals are now over their capacity for admissions. Here are the responses from our readers via The Gleaner’s social media pages:
“So, 272 hospitalisations full all ‘large’ hospitals in a country? So the ‘large’ hospitals only have 30 beds each and we out here proposing to build billion-dollar parliament building? I remember, not long ago, breaking news reported Jamaica was to receive two 36-bed and two 40-bed COVID field hospitals totalling 152, any update? I don’t see them mentioned.”

“Watch how poor people get the blame when Dream Weekend just rolled out, with all the well-to-do people there maskless, bumping and grinding, unbothered with special guest, COVID-19.”
– Adrianne LJ
“I’m wondering if some of you people are from another planet. People are actually being hospitalised and dying from COVID. Since last week, I personally know of two persons who have died, young persons; and since yesterday, three who have been admitted to hospital due to the virus. It is clear why the virus is spreading….sigh.”

“Of course they are gonna be over their capacity, because a two likkle bed inna d hospital dem!”

“You know what would be helpful? Displaying the number of beds each of these facilities actually have. We’ve been have a shortage of bed space for victims of violent crime and car crashes, please don’t pretend COVID is the ultimate reason for the capacity overage.” – @ashikabii
“People will still say they don’t want the vaccine, and that all this is just to scare people. I hope this is a wake-up call to us as a people to do all that we can to prevent its spreading.” – @willryanwilson
“I don’t understand why ppl on here asking why? Y’all know why. Illegal parties, crowded grocery stores, not wanting to take the vaccine, and the list goes on …” – @fabglam26
